5 Digital Marketing Mistakes Columbia Gorge Businesses Make

Hood River Ciderfest

& How to Fix Them

If you run a business in the Columbia Gorge, you know how important it is to connect with locals and visitors alike. But in today’s digital world, many businesses struggle with their online marketing strategies—often making costly mistakes that hold them back. To help you stand out and grow, here are the 5 most common digital marketing mistakes Columbia Gorge businesses make and exactly how to fix them.

1. Neglecting Mobile Optimization

Why it matters:

More than half of all website traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, visitors will leave quickly — and so will potential customers.

How to fix it:

Make sure your website is responsive, meaning it adjusts perfectly to any screen size. Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test to check your site’s performance and work with your web developer to improve navigation, loading speed, and readability on phones and tablets.

Real-World Result:

A local winery revamped its mobile site and saw a 40% increase in mobile visits and a 25% boost in online bookings.

2. Ignoring Local SEO

Why it matters:

When people search for products or services nearby, you want your business to show up at the top. Without local SEO, your business risks being invisible to the community that matters most.

How to fix it:

Claim and optimize your Google My Business listing. Add accurate business hours, photos, and encourage happy customers to leave reviews. Use location-based keywords like “Columbia Gorge hiking gear” to boost your visibility in local searches.

Real-World Result:

An outdoor gear store optimized its local SEO and increased store visits by 50% within months.

3. Overlooking Social Media Engagement

Why it matters:

Posting on social media isn’t enough. Customers want to feel heard and connected with your brand.

How to fix it:

Create a consistent posting schedule with engaging content like behind-the-scenes photos, promotions, and local event highlights. Respond promptly to comments and messages to build trust and loyalty.

Real-World Result:

A local café increased its social media engagement by 60% just by actively interacting with its followers daily.

4. Failing to Track and Analyze Results

Why it matters:

Without data, you’re guessing what works. That’s expensive and inefficient.

How to fix it:

Set up Google Analytics and track key metrics like website visits, user behavior, and conversions. Use this data to tweak your marketing strategies for better results.

Real-World Result:

A bed and breakfast identified top-performing pages and boosted online bookings by 30% by optimizing its site based on analytics.

5. Relying on a Single Marketing Channel

Why it matters:

Putting all your eggs in one basket—like only using Facebook—can backfire if that channel changes its algorithm or goes down.

How to fix it:

Diversify your marketing by combining social media platforms, email marketing, and content marketing to reach a wider audience and build resilience.

Real-World Result:

A brewery that expanded from Facebook to Instagram and email saw a 20% increase in event attendance despite Facebook’s unpredictable changes.

Lost Lake with Mt Hood in Hood River County Oregon

One of the family’s favorite places to camp is Lost Lake, Oregon at the base of Mt. Hood. I’ve been going there with my parents since I was a small child. This is a dusk photo, about a half-hour before sunset.

World's Largest Mural - 1993

I had the privilege of photographing the World’s Largest Mural in ‘93. The “Elvis” mural was a Guinness Book of World Records category-winning event. It was 77,000 sq ft, on canvas, painted by 4 MFA students from The Savannah College of Art and Design.

My documentary project was transformed into a 50+ piece art show, which SCAD utilized as a recruitment tool; it toured the country for a couple of years.

On Saturday (May 10th), I had the opportunity to photograph the Columbia Gorge Wine Festival at the Hood River County Fairgrounds. This event was a fundraiser for the Hood River Educational Foundation. This was a tough event to photograph. It was in one of the smaller buildings at the fairgrounds, lit with fluorescent lighting, and quite hot.

I focused on close-up images rather than medium or wide shots as the space was not ideal. Unless it’s rainy or chilly, I love it when events are outdoors. It photographs better, and the energy/ambiance is always much better.

But I believe this was a good event for the HR Educational Foundation.

Hood River Cider Fest

The 10th annual Hood River Cider Fest was held on May 3rd at the Hood River Event Site.

The 10th annual Hood River Cider Fest was held on May 3rd at the Hood River Event Site. Cider lovers found a wide range of ciders to sample—all made by some of the finest cider makers in Oregon and Washington! The weather was perfect for photos and videos: the day started out softly overcast, and the afternoon was wonderfully clear sunshine. The temperatures were in the low 70s, a perfect spring day in the Columbia Gorge.

Below are the best of the photos I snapped at the event.

The full gallery was shared with the event organizer, TrueWest Presents, and multiple other vendors for use on their social media accounts. The Full Gallery is Here.

Alison and I also produced a video for our YouTube Channel - CaptureAndCarryOn (will be published soon, I still need to finish editing it).

This event represents a full day’s worth of documentary photography and video services that I can provide.

I'm back

I’ve been working on getting many of my past images posted with a few different stock agencies. My work is now available on Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, and others. I want thousands of images to get uploaded to these stock agencies. They’re not making any money sitting in my hard drive, so I might as well get them out for public consumption.

Wow, I just looked and haven’t published a blog post for a long time. Between raising teenagers, traveling with my wife and managing a hobby farm time has screamed past.
